What is Reiki?

Rei means spirit, divine, and Ki is vital energy. Ki in Japan is similar to Chi or Qi in China, Mana in Hawai’i, Prana in India. It refers to life force energy, or the energy that animates all living things.

Reiki takes into account the whole person and helps activate each person’s natural healing processes, as well as restoring their physical and emotional well-being. It clears energetic blocks that may be causing physical pain or emotional intensities. Reiki invites your mind, body, and spirit to access the energy it needs to heal, feel balanced, be healthy, and thrive. Reiki can be used in conjunction with other forms of therapies.

There are many different Reiki styles practiced around the world, but almost all trace their roots back to Sensei Mikao Usui, a spiritual seeker who was born in Japan in 1865. Usui trained 17 Reiki Masters, including Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, who trained Mrs. Hawayo Takata, a Kaua’i born daughter of Japanese plantation workers. Very ill with a tumor, gallstones, appendicitis and asthma, and a widowed mother of two, Takata traveled to Japan where she entered the clinic of Dr. Hawashi. After daily Reiki treatments for four months, she was completely healed. Mrs. Takata then traveled back to Hawai’i, along with Dr. Hayashi, to establish Reiki there. She is credited with introducing Reiki to the western world. She died in 1980, after initiating 22 Reiki masters. White Light Reiki is rooted in this deep lineage of Japanese and Hawaii-based healers.
